Buying secondhand clothes has not always been as common as it is today. I remember when I was in high school, we would go to secondhand stores to look for random “quirky” items, usually to complete a Halloween costume. Today however, with so much emphasis and available information on environmental changes and the realities of fast fashion, secondhand shopping has become a new norm.
Companies like Poshmark and ThreadUp showed us how you can find amazing clothes for half the price, and that shopping for pre-owned clothes is stigma-free. This is why I started Threads of Hope. I love finding great clothes at great prices, and wanted to show others how they can do the same. What I think is even better than the shopping part, is that Threads of Hope gives 20% of all clothing sale proceeds to a charitable cause.
Still not convinced? Here are some reasons why you should jump into shopping secondhand:
It Saves You Money. This may be the most obvious one. When you buy second hand clothes, you will usually pay half the price – sometimes even less! When someone donates their clothes, it’s usually because those clothes no longer fit them or because they don’t fit that person’s style anymore. At Threads of Hope, you will see some amazing deals! Take advantage of great quality pieces by browsing our pre-loved collection. You won’t be disappointed!
It’s More Sustainable. A lot of water goes into making clothes — it takes over 700 gallons of water to make a cotton t-shirt. When you purchase pre-owned clothes, you are doing a solid favor for the future. Pre-owned clothes are already made; so when you conscientiously purchase and wear your clothes, you are lending a helping hand to the environment.
Think about this: Your friend has owned an adorable sundress for the last 3 years, and it has been her staple for every girls night out during those warm summer months. This past winter, she had a baby and her body has changed. She is updating her wardrobe to clothes that she feels amazing in, and asks you if you want it. Now, the dress is still in good condition, as she took great care of it. Better yet, it’s your size! Why would you pass on it just because it was made three years ago? Take my advice, and grab it before another friend if yours takes it. Not only will you feel great in such a cute dress, but your friend will love that it is getting used by someone she cares about so much.
It Eliminates Fast Fashion. Buying secondhand cuts down the demand for fast fashion. Unfortunately, it is common for the fashion industry to have unsafe working conditions, long hours, and low pay for its employees. In 2013 the Rana Plaza collapsed in Bangladesh, killing over 1100 garment workers. The incident exposed the deplorable conditions the workers had, including no ventilation, unsafe buildings, and ingesting toxic chemicals. So the next time you walk by a store and see a 2 for $10 deal in the window, think of those people suffering from the inhumane working conditions…and just keep walking.
